White furniture is becoming increasingly popular due to its sleek modern look and ability to tie together a lot of modern décor. However, those who own these sofas live in constant fear of spills that can cause ugly and glaring stains. What many of these furniture owners don’t realize is that removing a stain from a white piece of furniture doesn’t have to be difficult. While you do need to act quickly, here are a few simple steps that can help you pull stains out of white sofas, loveseats, or chair cushions.
Vacuum the Piece
The first thing you need to do is remove any dirt or dust that’s already in your sofa before adding any water or cleaning solution. When these small contaminants get wet, they stick together, and when they stick together they can turn into mud that leads to even worse staining. Get the vacuum out quickly and give your sofa a quick but thorough cleaning to remove these contaminants.
Using a clean cloth, blot the stain to remove as much as possible before it can be absorbed into your furniture material. If the stain is wine or coffee, apply a paste mixture of baking soda and water for just a few minutes before dabbing it off. If the stain is grease or oil, use corn starch for 15 to 20 minutes. These materials absorb stains extremely well and will remove most of the traces of the stain.
Create a Foam Cleanser
Surface stains are one thing, but you want to prevent the stain from getting down into the foam as well. Use half a cup of powdered laundry detergent and a quarter-cup of water to make a foamy cleaning paste (an electric mixer does a great job with this). Apply this mixture to the entire piece of furniture, not just the spot of the stain. Cleaning the entire piece this way can help you eliminate any leftover odors and lift any grime or dirt out of the foam.
Vacuum the Piece (Again)
Once your piece has fully dried out from this cleaning treatment (which could take up to 48 hours, mind you) bring out your vacuum one more time and thoroughly clean off the piece again. This should allow you to remove any of the sunk-in dirt that was lifted out by your foam cleanser.Need your home cleaned?
